Extra Credit: “Painting with light” live demo

Please join us for a live demonstration led by photographer Nick Butler marking the closing of his solo exhibition Realizing Beauty. In this exhibition, the body of work revolves around human figures, celebrating their particular differences while affirming an ideal of universal beauty. On closer inspection, what might seem to be straightforward portraits belie the hand of the artist—his technique of selectively illuminating his subjects with handheld lights in long exposures creates an unexpected painterly effect, their subtle movements recorded in a kind of digital impasto.

This event will begin at sundown (7pm) with a brief talk by the artist describing his process of “painting with light” in more detail, followed by a live demonstration and open discussion. Refreshments will be provided.

In celebration of El Museo’s 35th year, this event is part of “Extra Credit,” an event series where exhibiting artists can interact with their audiences in a more intimate setting, and explore topics or themes related to their work. It is open to the public ($5 suggested donation) and free for El Museo members.
