Extra Credit: “The Making of Special”

Phyllis Thompson, Meditating About Her, 2017, monotype, collage, drawing, 8″x10″.

Join us for an art-making workshop with Phyllis Thompson to mark the closing of her exhibition, Memories of Making Special. A longtime printmaker and educator, Thompson uses a wide array of techniques and processes in her one-of-a-kind, richly surfaced prints.

In particular, this workshop will focus on monotype, “the most painterly method among the printmaking techniques,” which involves the direct manipulation of ink, textured elements, and even drawing on a plate to create single prints with unique qualities. Also featured will be a contemporary, kid-(and adult!)-friendly take on an old classic: vegetable relief printing. Following a brief demonstration by the artist, participants will be able to create their own works with provided materials.

Extra Credit is an ongoing event series where exhibiting artists can interact with their audiences in a more intimate setting, and explore topics or themes related to their work. It is open to the public ($5 suggested donation) and free for El Museo members.
